Does an employee need to stop using vibrating tools after symptoms are reported?

This is one of the most common questions following HAVS screening.

The answer depends on the type and persistence of symptoms.

Mild symptoms

Occasional tingling without loss of sensation may allow continued work while awaiting review, although exposure may be reduced.

Circulatory symptoms (finger blanching)

Blanching is more significant and often leads to temporary restriction until assessment determines safe exposure.

Persistent numbness or loss of dexterity

Where symptoms affect function, work with vibrating tools is usually stopped pending clinical advice.

Why assessment is important

Employers are not expected to diagnose HAVS themselves. The purpose of medical assessment is to determine whether exposure can safely continue and under what conditions.

In practice, the aim is not to remove workers unnecessarily, but to prevent progression while maintaining safe employment.
